From Savings to Shark Tanks: What’s New at Breakwater

Kids are back in school, leaves are beginning to change, and the new season brings opportunities for learning, growth and community engagement. This past month we’ve celebrated youth savings and engaged in meaningful community activities.  Looking ahead, we have some exciting events planned for this fall, and we can’t wait to share them with you today!

Fun Committee Spearheads a Successful Supply Drive for Copper Country Humane Society

We kicked off the month of September by hosting a supply drive for the Copper Country Humane Society. From toys to treats to cat litter—by the end of the two-week drive, we had two car loads full of wonderful donations. Thank you to our members for your support in this effort! We are so grateful for all the work that the Copper Country Humane Society does for our community, and it was an honor to be able to give back to them!

On the Green at the Keweenaw Chamber Premiere Golf Outing

We enjoyed a beautiful day on the green during the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce 27th Annual Premiere Golf Outing! Not only did we sponsor a hole, but we also had a great time connecting with fellow Chamber members and neighbors in the community.

Golfers who stopped by our table had the chance to pick a lucky golf ball for an instant prize and take a guess at the number of tees in a large vase for a shot at winning a golf course gift card.

Huge shoutout to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce for coordinating this fantastic event each year and to everyone who stopped by our table for some fun!

Youth Savings Month Giveaway Encourages Smart Money Habits

With a new school year underway, we thought September was the perfect time to encourage youth savings and smart money habits. For the month of September all youth who opened a new account or made a deposit in an existing account were entered into a drawing to win one of our oversized plush pigs that were used during parade season, and a copy of the beloved book, Charlotte’s Web.

All children who stopped by were also offered free piggy banks, stickers, and coloring books. While our September giveaway may be over, we encourage families to continue making saving a fun and regular part of their child’s routine!

Congratulations to Vaughn Crist and Havok Pelto for winning our Youth Savings Month prizes!

Breakwater is thrilled to announce its first-ever Shark Tank Style Competition for Middle School and High School students across the Copper Country! This challenge models the TV show, Shark Tank, and gives students the opportunity to pitch business ideas to a panel of Copper Country sharks!

From revolutionary products to unique services that offer solutions to local problems, students are invited to show off their creativity and business smarts during this friendly competition. All students will be judged on the same set of criteria, with cash prizes and special awards for both High School and Middle School divisions.

The Superior Shark Tank Challenge will take place Thursday, November 20th from 5:30 to 7:30PM at the Hancock Community Hub Auditorium. There will also be an Information and Prep Session to provide students with one-on-one coaching on November 6th at 6PM at the Portage Lake District Library. Those wishing to participate can find full details on our Superior Shark Tank page.

Breakwater to Celebrate CU Kind Day

Breakwater FCU is excited to participate in Credit Union (CU) Kind Daya nationwide celebration where credit unions come together to spread kindness and make a difference in their communities.

To celebrate, we are giving each of our employees $100 to spread cheer in our community – whether its donating to their favorite cause, buying supplies for a local charity, or covering tabs at local establishments. We are excited to give our employees the opportunity to help others and spread cheer in our community.

In support of our Financial Literacy initiative, we also purchased about twenty different books about personal finance and money management suitable for all age groups that will be donated to free book libraries across Houghton County. We are excited to provide resources that will help our community flourish.

The remainder of our CU Kind Day budget will be used to buy supplies for local charities. With grant support from Michigan Credit Union Foundation, we are excited to do even more for our community this CU Kind Day!
